Abstract
28,984. Lennox, A. H. Dec. 13. Washing.-In apparatus for washing smoke, of the type comprising for example open-work screens, rods, or strips of corrugated metal down which water flows from an overhead tank, one or a series of screen members is mounted in a supporting bar or frame resting on the bottom of the tank in or over one or more slots through which the members depend. The parallel screens e, Fig. 1, located in a flue a are mounted by means of cross-pins in bars o resting loosely in slots n in the bottom of the tank c. Water and separated impurities fall from the screens into a tank h formed by dwarf flue walls g, from whence the water drains into a deeper tank, preferably divided into two compartments, outside the flue, and is returned to the tank c by a pump l. The flue is gradually increased and decreased in cross-sectional area on opposite sides of the screen. Where a screen equivalent consists of a series of rods, the rods of one screen are arranged to break joint with those of adjacent screens. Fig. 7 shows a screen equivalent consisting of vertical wires doubly looped over horizontal bars and held by angleirons s bolted together. Screens of wires woven diagonally, or expanded metal, or preferably screen equivalents consisting of strips of corrugated iron, are mounted as shown in Fig. 3, and located, as shown in Fig. 10, to cause the smoke to take a zigzag path.
