Abstract

28,254. Gilbert, H. Dec. 5. Reservoir pens: - In reservoir pens of the type in which ink is supplied in capsules with sealed ends. the capsules are placed in a case or chamber at the ends of which means are provided for perforating the seals and for regulating the flow of ink by valves and an automatic vent. As shown in Fig. 1, the capsule 3 is enclosed in a chamber 1, screwing into the lower end of which is a tubular piercer 4 surrounded by two connected sleeves 7, 9, the latter having a bore 10 to connect with the central or eccentric bore 4 of the piercer 4; and the pressure at the joint between the members 4, 9 i s maintained by a spring 6 placed on a shoulder of the member 4. At the upper end of the pen a spring and ball or poppet valve 18 are placed in the bore of another tubular piercer 14, while a spring 21, arranged between a shoulder 14 and the cap 13, supplies the pressure necessary to effect the piercing of the capsule on affixing the said cap in position. In order to prevent leakage of ink into the chamber 1 rubber cushions 12, 22, through which the piercers project, are placed at each end of the chamber. By revolving the sleeves 7, 9, the bores 10, 4 may be put into communication when desired, and the supply of ink to the nib regulated. The upper portion of the pen may be modified either as in Fig. 3, where the piercer 15 is attached to the cap and the vent regulated by screwing the cap up or down, a spring 26 maintaining the pressure at the lower end between the capsule and cushion 12; or as in Fig. 7, where, for venting the pen, the tubular piercer is arranged to connect the capsule with a collapsible air chamber 28. Slots are provided in the chamber 1 in order that the level of ink may be seen, and the pen may be used in conjunction with ruling-nibs.
