Abstract

27,389. NitrogÞne Soc. Anon. Nov. 27, 1909, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Gases, treating with electric discharge.-Relates to the apparatus described in Specification 21,721/10, for effecting endothermic reactions in gases, in which gases are passed through tubes opening into a common chamber and each enclosing a pair of electrodes between which arcs are struck, and all the electrodes being connected in series. According to the present invention, the gases are drawn through the apparatus by a suction-pump, and the apparatus may be arranged to work under diminished pressure, for example, by enclosing the tubes in a casing and allowing the gases to enter through a throttle-valve. Or the gases may be forced through the apparatus by connecting a compressor to the casing enclosing the ends of the tubes. The gases are preheated by passage through a tube 7, Fig. 4, which surrounds the tube T enclosing the electrodes; or the gases may be cooled by the external device 8, Fig. 5, or by the refrigerator 9, Fig. 6, within the tube. Further, the electrodes 11 are made with renewable heads 10, Fig. 7. The electrodes are provided with an external cooling-jacket, or may consist of a bent tube through which water flows.
