Abstract

25,916. Burdick, C. L. Nov. 8. [Cognate Application, 3401/11.] Counters for checks, coins, &c. - An apparatus for counting coins of various denominations and for registeri n g the total value thereof, comprises means for moving the coins past a registering- mechanism, which is thereby actuated by an amount depending on the value or diameter of the coin, and means also for registering the number of coins in each denomination passed through the machine. A stop mechanism is provided for arresting the machine after a predetermined sum of money has been counted. T h e coins, which may be led to a hopper 1 by means of a conveyer belt and pulley, are carried forward singly by the apertures 10 in a disk 9 rotated through a friction clutch 17, 18 from the handle 16, or driven through pulleys 6, 15 from a source of motive power. The disk 9 delivers the coins to a receiving-disk 21, which is rotated at a greater speed than the disk 9, and is provided with pins or rollers 26 which carry the coins past a lever 28. The amount of rotation imparted to the lever 28 depends on t h e diameter of the coin, and is transmitted by sectors 35, 36 and a pawl 38 to a ratchetwheel 39 and pointer 41. Variations in the size of the coins in one denomination are c o mpensated for by means of spring detents 43, which are adapted to engage notches on the indicating-dial 42. A pointer 67 projecting over the edge of the dial 42 indicates the value of each individual coin counted. The coins may be delivered to bags, which can be fastened to a shoot 30, and when the predetermined number has been delivered further rotation of the disk 21 is prevented by a stop 60, which is released to engage the teeth on the disk 21 when a trigger 56 is moved out of engagement therewith by means of lugs 53 upon each half-revolution of a toothed disk 48. The disk 48 is rotated by means of a tooth 47 on the spindle 37, and is adapted to actuate a counter 45 for the higher units of value. By using a varying number of lugs, the machine can be arrested after any given sum has been counted, and the stop 60 can be restored to normal position by means of a lever 62. Should a part only of a coin be required to fill the bag with the desired amount, as indicated by the position of the pointer 67, that amount can be taken from the hopper and placed in the bag, and to ensure the correct result in the succeeding operation, the lever 68 is operated to actuate the counter to the same extent. To register the number of coins in each denomination, the lever 28 is provided with an arm 72 having a swing- ing bar 73 adapted to ride over the ratchetwheels of a number of counters. The bar 73 is mounted on swinging arms 75, which are pivoted to a travelling carriage 74. This arrangement is such that only the last ratchet-wheel over which the pawl 85 on the bar 73 has passed is actuated thereby, i.e., while the bar is swinging from the dotted to the full-line position, as shown in Fig. 10.
