Abstract

Embossing; forming. -A figured or relief moulding for mirror and picture frames &c. is made by taking a soft wood rod or strip formed as a plain moulding, coating the surface with palm or other oil, and impressing the required design on its moulded surface by means of an engraved die or matrix, which may be heated by gas &c. if desired. Figs. 1 and 3 show a construction of apparatus in which the die a and strip c are carried in a guide part band the pressure is applied gradually by means of rollers d, e, f .. d<1>, e<1>, f<1> .., the distance between their axes progressively decreasing. Fig. 5 shows an hydraulic press having several pistons i for impressing a design on a moulding q by means of a die o. The moulding q is carried by blocks k, l resting on plates j on the top of the pistons i, and is prevented from bursting under compression by angle-pieces p. A device for heating the die o may be inserted between the blocks k, l. The dies may be provided with detachable faces, and other pressure-producing devices may be used.
