Abstract

24,783. Boult, A. J., [United Shoe Machinery Co.]. Oct. 25. Loose-nailing.-A tacking or nailing apparatus for boots and shoes, comprising means for driving tacks &c. at the opposite sides and toe end, is arranged so that, by a preliminary adjustment, the insertion of one tack on each side of the shoe may be suspended; another adjustment provides for varying the driving location of the toe tack. The invention is described as applied to pulling-over machines of the type described in Specifications 7005/00, 12,304/03, and 16,337/08, [all in Class 17, Boots &c.], which are arranged to drive seven tacks into a shoe, as shown in Fig. 4. The tacks gravitate down shoots in a raceway block 20, Fig. 3, to a separator slide 10. According to the present invention, the block is cut away at its lower end above the slide to receive stop plates 22, 23, which have openings 24 cut through them in position to aline, respectively, with the first and second, and the sixth and seventh raceway grooves. The plates are adapted to be moved simultaneously by a handoperated worm and wheel 25*, 26*, Fig. 7. When they are in their central positions, all the passages are open. When the plates are closed together, the first and seventh tacks are cut off; and, when they are moved in the opposite direction, the second and sixth tacks are cut off. A similar arrangement may be provided at the toe end; but to avoid duplication of parts, the toetacker is instead made laterally adjustable to insert a tack to one side or other of the median line of the machine. For this purpose, the toetacker arm 35, Fig. 2, in addition to being hung at 36 for inward and outward swinging, is pivoted at 38 for lateral swinging, and is slotted transversely at 40 to receive a cross-bar 42 connecting the wide ends of a forked bar 888 of the usual mechanism for moving the tacker into and out of operative position. The guideway in the head 2 is enlarged, and is overlaid by a plate 45, in which the arm fits as to width, but can move freely forwards and backwards. This plate is operable by means of rack gearing 46, 48, and a locking-device 50, 52. The toe-gripper bar 60 may be guided in the plate 45 for lateral adjustment with the toe-tacker; the toe wiper is also adjusted with the tacker. If desired, any or all of the side tackers may be arranged for adjustment longitudinally of the shoe.
