Impurities, separating from air and gases.-Relates to the separation of dust and similar impurities from air and gases, and the humidifying thereof,. being applicable for use in connexion with the textile and other industries and in the ventilation of buildings, factories, mines, &c., and consists in a filtering-device or its equivalent which is automatically cleansed by 'intermittent immersion in a liquid cleansing-medium, the cleansing operation being further facilitated by the discharge of a stream of liquid during the immersion. A screen or filter b<6> composed of cloth, wire gauze, strands of bass or fibre, corrugated or other plates arranged radially, or cords, tubes, rods, or beads of glass or metal, depends from a tank a arranged over a dustladen air conduit a<1>, which may be a chimney, flue, the suction or delivery pipe of a fan or blower, or the outlet from a centrifugal separator. The upper compartment of the tank is gradually filled with water from a service main a<7>, whereupon a float b<1> releases a catch c<4> supporting the tank, which falls by gravity and permits a weighted lever b to cut off the water supply. The filter is thus immersed in an annular trough b<7>, and the conduit a<1> closed meanwhile by a conical projection on the adjustable bottom of the tank. During the fall, the stem of a valve c<5> is arrested, and the water from the tank passes through an annular slit between the bottom and walls of the lower compartment of the tank, and flushes the inner periphery of the filter. The tank is raised by counterweights and automatically re-locked in its .raised position after raising the weighted lever to turn on the water. Water, steam, or compressed air may be supplied through auxiliary spray-pipes c, which may serve as guides for the filter. Steam, hot water, or hot air may also be supplied through pipes e<4> applied externally or internally as desired, or steam or hot water may be supplied to the tank or trough. In a modification, in order to give repeated douches or plunges to the filter, a reciprocating movement is imparted to it by eccentrics independently of the movement it receives with the tank. The eccentric shaft is stopped and 'started by belf-shifting mechanism operated automatically by the rising and falling movement of the tank.
