Abstract

24,538. Myers, C. A. Oct. 22. Cutting-out apparatus.-Relates to improved feed-mechanism for machines having combined longitudinal and lateral intermittent feeds. The machine also comprises a pivoted work-table with which the feed-mechanism coacts, the whole being adapted to be swung aside to facilitate access to the dies &c. A cutting - attachment serves to remove simultaneously with the punching operation the ragged edge resulting from that operation. A work-table 9 is adjustably mounted on extensions 16 of arms 10 adapted to be swung about pivots 11 to facilitate access to the dies &c. The sheet to be operated upon is engaged by gripping-means 30, 32, which are adapted to be operated to impart to the sheet intermittent movements at right-angles to each other to provide for successive rows of punching and successive punchings in each row. An adjustment is provided for securing a staggered relationship between successive rows. The gripping-means 30, 32 is pivotally connected to rods 29, resiliently mounted in tubes 28 secured to a sleeve 25 splined on a spindle 24 journaled in extensions 22 of the arms 10. The spindle 24 is intermittently rotated, to secure the feed necessary for successive rows of punchings, by ratchet mechanism operated by a spring- controlled hand-lever 40, such mechanism comprising a ratchet-wheel 37 on the spindle 24 and a spring-controlled pawl 39 on the lever 40. A suitable adjustable stop-device 47, 45 serves to limit the stroke of the lever 40 and the extent of feed. The resilient mounting of the rod 29 allows for the necessary relative movement of the parts 29, 28 during the feed. The second or transverse feed is obtained by a lateral displacement of the sleeve 25 with its feeding- attachments along the spindle 24. This sleeve is provided with a series of collars 48 adjustably clamped thereto, these collars being engaged by a spring-pressed dog 50, Fig. 7, to lock the feeding-means temporarily in successive positions. The dog 50 is tapered slightly, so that it yields to allow movement of the sleeve 25 when sufficient force is exerted. The collars 48 are so shaped that they may be rotated on the spindle 24 into an inoperative position. The dog 50 is carried by a lever 51 provided with a hub'61, Fig. 8, slidably mounted on a sleeve 54 on a spindle 23, the sleeve being provided with notches 56, 57 corresponding with the two initial portions of the feed required in successive rows for staggered punchings. One or other of these notches is engaged by a spring- controlled lever 58 pivoted on the lever 51, which thereby determines the position of the dog 50 corresponding to the initial position of the feed for successive rows. Vertical-cutter type for cutting sheet material in direction of feed.-Means for severing the ragged edges of the material resulting from the cutting operation comprises a spring-controlled cutter 65 pivoted to an adjustable bracket 67 and adapted to be depressed by an adjustable bracket 66 on the punch cross-head 4. The cutter 65 coacts with a fixed blade 63 in a slot in the table, and serves to sever the superfluous material as it leaves the punch 5.
