Abstract

23,843. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Horne, J. Oct. 14. Loading-appliances.-Relates to ramming-apparatus for heavy guns, and consists in an arrangement whereby the loading-cage, as it completes its ascent, automatically starts the rammer motor for ramming the projectile into the gun. The hydraulic motor is controlled by a hand-lever D<1> and valve D<2> on the gun platform in addition to the automatic control valve D<Î> mounted on the loading-arm B<1>. The valve D<Î> is normally locked in the " withdraw " position shown, by a spring bolt D<3>. When the lever D<1> is in the " ram " position, it connects the right-hand end of the valve-casing D<ÎÎ> to exhaust through the flexible pipe d<1>, so that, when the cage C in its ascent withdraws the bolt D<3> by a projection A<1> on the cage lifting a lever d<2> connected to the bolt, the pressure admitted to the valve casing by the pipe d<Î> acts upon the differential areas of the valve D<Î> and moves the valve into the " ram " position. The lever D<1> is afterwards returned to the " withdraw " position, and admits pressure to the valve D<Î> through the pipe d<1>; the valve is thereby moved back again into the " withdraw " position. The rammer may be automatically reversed when ramming the powder charges, by the mechanism described in Specification 20,119/10.
