Abstract
22,682. Curwen, M. E., [Brill Co., J. G.]. Sept. 30. Axle-trucks and bogies; springs, arrangement of.-Relates to swinging-link suspension devices for supporting the truck frame from the axles so as to allow radial movement of the axles. There is no sub-truck frame, the motor casing being connected to the main truck frame by pivotal connexions so that it may follow the movements of the axle. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the links 17 have a ball-and-socket connexion 21 with the caps 22 of springs 23 carried by lugs 24 on the axle-box, and they support the truck frame 2 by means of the yoke-brace 16. The truck frame 2 may be pivotally connected to the car body, but preferably, and as shown, is fixed thereto by the chords 42 and springs 43. To prevent undue oscillation, and to give an increased tendency to return to the normal position when displaced, the connexion for the lower ends of the links consists of two pins 19 on a saddle 20 resting against the yokebrace 16, with which pins the T-shaped end 18 of the links engages, Fig. 2. Normally the weight is shared by the two pins, but it is taken by one only when the links are inclined. In a modification, Fig. 18, the pins 68 are secured to the link and pass through openings 70 in a block 69 trunnioned at 71 in the saddle 72, which bears against the yoke-brace 16. Or the two-pin support may be dispensed with and a ball-and-socket connexion similar to that at 21 be employed for the lower ends of the links. The motor casing 6 is supported at one end upon the axles as usual, and at the other end it has a pivotal connexion with the cross members 9 of the truck frame 2. Three such connexions are shown. In one form, a vertical bolt 29, Fig. 3<a>, passes through the members 27, 28 secured respectively to the brake-supporting angle-bars 26 fixed to the motor casing and to the cross-member 9. Or, to allow of slight universal movement, the vertical bolt 57, Fig. 9, passes through a block 54, horizontally trunnioned in the block 50 secured between the bars 48, 52 bolted to the motor casing. The third form of connexion consists of a ball-and-socket 62, 63, Fig. 13. The brake mechanism is mounted upon the motor casing 6 by means of angle-irons 26, to which are fixed brackets 30, 31, 40 supporting the brake shaft 32 and the hangers 39 for the brake shoes 38.
