Abstract
21,231. McMullan, R. Sept 12. Steering and balancing; planes, arrangement of.-Lateral tilting and sliding of aeroplanes is counteracted by means of flaps pivoted at the lateral extremities of the main planes and arranged to be adjusted automatically about longitudinal axes when a tilt occurs. A rear rudder is also arranged to be operated by the tilt of the planes, and means are provided for adjusting the angle of incidence of the planes. The operative parts can be readily detached. The Figure shows a monoplane having wings a, b, which are secured to sleeves a' mounted on a backbone c, and are provided with flaps d, e, which are automatically adjusted, a s shown, by means of bellcranks f and stay ropes g<1>, g<2> secured to a mast g. The flaps are further connected by a rope h passing over a pulley h', which is mounted on a frame j pivoted at j<1> to the car j<2>. The planes a, bare also connected by a rope k passing over a pulley k<1>, and by ropes m, m<1> secured to the frame j, which is fitted with springs m<3> to cushion the swing of the planes. The rudder p<1> may be operated by a tiller p<3> and ropes r passing over pulleys r' on the planes, the tiller being also arranged to be actuated by jaws p' secured on the sleeve a'. The backbone c is pivoted at c<1>, so that the incidence of the planes may be adjusted by means of ropes c<3>, c<4> operated by a hand-lever c<2>.
