Abstract

18,944. O'Malley, E. Aug. 11. Seats. - The valve members and valve seats of lift valves are provided with contacting surfaces consisting of one or more thin annular rings of nickel, brass, or phosphor bronze, detachably secured to the respective members. Fig. 15 shows a valve member 65 fitted with a single ring 68 loosely held in position by a nut 67; the valve seat may have a single plate loosely held by an annular nut. A series of rings with their edges soldered together may be secured in a similar manner. The rings for both the valve member and seat may be formed with projecting ears through which bolts are passed. The seat rings, which may be secured to a removable seat member by a screwed or hinged annular ring, are held in position by an annular ring, or by a cage or yoke secured to the casing and provided with adjustments to compensate for wear. Fig. 2 shows the plates 17 secured by a ring 16 to the seat member 7, which is held in place by a yoke 8. The yoke may be screwed into the casing and also into a cap closing the opening through which the seat is inserted. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the plates 17 and seat member 7 are held in position by a cage 31 pressed down by a bonnet 38 and provided with a recess 39 in which worn plates are placed as they are removed from the seat. The recess may be dispensed with, and the bonnet made adjustable. The cage may be provided with a telescopic adjustable part. Repairing.-To facilitate the removal of worn plates, the valve is mounted in a cylindrical member 20, secured by lock-nuts 26, and adapted when rotated to isolate the valve.
