Abstract

18,848. Siemens Bros. Dynamo Works, [Siemens-Schuckertwerke]. Aug. 10. Alternating-current commutator machines.- In starting single-phase motors having one or more exciting windings e, f, Fig. 1, and a compensating-winding d, the exciting-windings are at first not connected to the supply, and, of the armature and compensating windings, the one is short-circuited either on itself or through an exciting-winding, while the other is connected to the supply; the commutator brushes are placed, at starting, with their axes situated 90 electrical degrees from the axis of the compensating-winding, and are gradually moved round towards the axis of the compensating-winding. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the motor is provided with two exciting-windings e, f, one for each direction of rotation; the various parts are connected to the coils g, h, i of the motor transformer through a switch - lever k having two contacts m, n and a switch-lever o having three contacts p, q, r. On turning the brushes b, c in the direction of the arrow, the motor starts, and, as it speeds up, the contacts k, n are made, and finally the switch-lever o is moved on to either of the contacts p, q. To start in the opposite direction, either the connexions of the brushes b, c are changed over, or both brushes are turned through 180 degrees, and afterwards moved round in the clockwise direction. The displacement of the brushes is limited by the switch o, so that they can only be brought into the axis of the compensating-winding when an exciting-winding is energized. In a modified arrangement, at the moment of starting, the exciting and armature windings are shortcircuited in series with each other, and the compensating-winding is connected to a portion of the motor transformer; after the brushes have been moved from the neutral position into line with the axis of the compensating-winding, the working voltage is applied to all of the windings connected in series.
