Abstract

18,764. Wagner, W. G. Aug. 9. Borax is obtained from natural borates by heating in a furnace, such as is employed in the Leblanc soda process, a mixture of the borate material with sodium sulphate and coal, the temperature being preferably such as to cause sintering. The product is slaked or ground and mixed with water, and carbonic acid, such as lime-kiln gases, is passed in. From the liquid, after removal of insoluble matter, borax is crystallized. According to the Provisional Specification, sodium sulphide may be used as an alternative to sodium sulphate and coal, and the furnace gases may be the source of carbonic acid.
