Abstract

Rolling.-In a continuous rolling- mill of the type in which successive passes at right-angles to each other are arranged around a central shaft, the axes of the rolls b are placed at forty-five degrees to the shaft f and are driven at increasing speeds by toothed bevel-gears e, which are mounted in supports d. In a modification, for use at very high speeds, similar friction gearing is employed, the pinions being pressed by levers under spring action against the wheels. Between each pair of rolls, guides p, Fig. 6, are arranged, with ball-mounted wheels q to minimize friction. A number of such mills may be arranged together, suitable guides being provided to lead the work from one mill to another. The rolls may be of frusto-conical form to give the work a curvature corresponding with that of the guides.
