Abstract

Tar macadam, plant for making.-Relates to portable or stationary apparatus of the kind described in Specifications 23,280/08 and 6680/09, and consists in providing a rotary reciprocating system for feeding and screening the road material in the drying-chamber, which system comprises a series of perforated cylindrical conveyers, for feeding the material forward prior to tarring, arranged around a pair of oppositely tapered concentric tubes, the inner of which is perforated and guides the tarred material to the rear, where it is sprinkled with the screenings from the cylindrical conveyers. In the apparatus shown in Figs 2 and 5, the rotary reciprocating system comprises a ring of cylinders 10, tapered tubes 4, 5, and elevators 14, 23. The road material is fed into a hopper 18 and conveyed by the elevator 14 to the perforated cylinders 10 which are provided with helices 38 for moving the material to the front of the apparatus, where it is received by the elevator 23 and conveyed through a tar-well 21. The tarred stones are then delivered into the inner perforated cone 5 which conducts them to the rear of the machine for application to the road, excess of tar falling through the cone 5 on to the inside of the closed cone 4 and draining back to the well through apertures in the end plate 7. The binding-matrix, screened from the road material by the cylinders 10, falls into the channels, between the cylinders 10 and the cone 4, formed by radial plates 12, and is delivered through apertures in the end plate 6 on to the tarred material that issues from the cone 5. The revolving system is mounted on roller bearings in slings 17 and rotated from a shaft 44, the slings being supported on links 41 connected with eccentrics 43 for imparting a reciprocating motion to the cones and cylinders. The tar is heated in a boiler 27 which is connected with tanks 24, 25, and which has a firebox 26, communicating with the interior by flues leading to an uptake 36, for the purpose of heating and drying the material to be tarred.
