Abstract

17,185. Dunne, J. W. July 19. Planes, arrangem e n t and construction o f ; framework. - To avoid collapse of an aeroplane when a boom or strut is broken by a bullet or otherwise, each boom and strut is duplicated, one member being set immediately behind the other, and the shapes and cross-sectional areas of the members are so arranged that, while the effective strength of the structure is maintained, the total weight is not materially increased. Fig. 4 shows the application to a biplane. The framework for each supporting-plane is formed with two pairs of transverse booms b, one pair, Fig. 6, near the forward edge, and the other pair, Fig. 7, slightly in advance of the trailing edge. The booms of the upper and lower planes are connected by vertical struts d, of which the members of each pair are provided at intervals with distances-pieces 3, Fig. 3. The cross-sectional shapes of the booms and struts are substantially such as would be obtained by the longitudinal severance of the usual solid members followed by a slight thickening of the parts in a fore and aft direction. The booms b may be strengthened by forming them with a curved forward edge as shown at 1, Fig. 4. The pairs of struts d may be enclosed in canvas or the like g, Fig. 3, so as to give a stream-line form to the section. In the application to a monoplane, the booms are stayed to corresponding vertical masts arranged in pairs along the inner edge of each wing.
