Abstract

17,094. Kleemann, G. July 18. Brush-making machines, in which the bristletufts are fixed with continuous wire of the type described in Specification 3626/06. The tufts are drawn into the stock by the wire, being held in loosely-sliding grippers which are also drawn towards the stock, against the action of a spring. The wire from the loose reel 7 passes through an open clamp 16, 17 on an arm 15 rocking loosely on a shaft 14, round a guide-roller 8 and another roller 9, which swinging about a pivot s, has laid the wire in front of the needle 6 and then moved down again. The needle pushes the wire through the brush-stock, and between grippers 34, 34<1> and guides 46, Fig, 7, to be opened into a wider loop by pliers 42, which, moved by an arm 45, are opened by mounting a wedge 43. A tuft of bristles is brought from the receptacle 55 by pliers 56 carried by a lever 60, 60<1> pivoted at 61 and having a pivot joint 59. The pliers 56 are guided by a pin 57 moving in a guide 58, and the tuft, cleaned by a comb 63, is inserted in the hollow grippers 34, 34<1>, one of which is larger than the other, Or a separate cam may be used to guide the tuft into these grippers; the hinder parts 33 of which are relatively lower. The grippers 34, 34<1> are held open for the reception of the tuft by inclines 65 acting on fixed stops 66. The wire a then becomes clamped at 16, 17, and the roller 9 rises, drawing the tuft into the stock by the wire loop, the grippers 34, 34<1>, which are mounted on a slidable carriage 38, being likewise drawn towards the stock against the action of a spring 41. The return - movement of the carriage is positively effected by an arm 40 and pin 39. In approaching the stock, the grippers 34, 34<1> press a spring-controlled guard 47 forwards and sideways, thereby pressing the last - inserted tuft out of the way. The clamp 16, 17 is closed in such a way as to prevent breakage of the wire, by the same lever 12 that raises the roller 9, through a link 28 connected to an arm 22 also rocking on the shaft 14, the other end of the arm 22 being connected through a spring to the plate 17 pivoted on the arm 15. which also carries a spring-controlled pawl. On the arm 22 being rocked to the left, the arm 15 is only at first carried with it, being retarded by some resistance of the clamp; the arm 22, however, continues to move, and carries a pin 24 along the tail of the pawl thus engaging it in a rack 64. During insertion of the first tuft, the free end of the wire is held under a pivoted clamp, the other end 31 of which is pressed by the roller 9 when rising. The workman moves the stock after each insertion.
