Abstract

16,050. Patric, C. E. Oct. 2, 1909, [Convention date]. Seed distributors.-In seed drills of the kind in which the seeds are fed from the hopper by pitted wheels or rollers, special means are provided for feeding and depositing the seeds, for throwing the mechanism in and out of gear, for covering the seeds, and for scraping the wheels. The main casing, comprising the hopper and the furrow opener, is made in two parts connected together at a<2>, and is provided with a pivoted handle c and with a front wheel and a rear wheel. A convex spring plate d<4> fits against the concave periphery of the interchangeable feedwheel d. The space on the opposite side of the feed-wheel may be closed by a slotted check plate and a spring gate removably held in place by a hooked rod d<11>, which is controlled by a spring d<14> and a handle d<13>. On both sides of the gate, the check plate is provided with inclined faces extending to the feed-wheel and conforming to its shape. The figures show an auxiliary hopper g removably secured in the main hopper a by the hooked rod d<11>. The narrow open bottom of this hopper fits loosely in a central depression in the feed-wheel d, and its outlet is normally closed by a spring gate g' bent as shown. The feed-wheel has a narrow hub which is loosely connected with its shaft d<1> by a projection fitting loosely in a keyway d<20>. It is driven from the rear wheel 2 by gear wheels d<18> mounted on a lever e, and is thrown out of gear by raising the lever e by means of a rod e<1> adjustably connected to a lever e<3>, which is locked in place by a bent flat spring. The pivots of the rod e<1> and handle c are in alinement. A removable seed-tube g" is placed in the furrow-opener. It has a rear flange g<12>, a curved extension g<13>, and a small outlet. The seed-coverer comprises two curved arms h, and is removably connected to the furrow opener by means of a long stud h<2>, a short stud h<3>, and a swinging latch or button. A convex, scraper for the rear wheel 2 is mounted on a bolt j<1> and is locked in position by a notch and lug. The front wheel is cleaned by a scraper a<14>, Fig. 1, which is pivoted at a<15> and is held in place by projections d<15>, d<16> engaging with the frame.
