Abstract

15,785. Halliwell, T. July 1. Yarns, damping.-For finishing, conditioning, or damping purposes, the yarns contained in a practically closed chamber are exposed to a current of moist air or the like induced through the top and exhausted from the bottom of the apparatus. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus consists of two chambers a, b communicating by a pipe c, the chamber a serving to collect any water or surplus moisture before the charged air comes into contact with the yarn placed, usually in skips, on a perforated floor l in the chamber b. Humidifiers d arranged in open-ended pipes e at the top of the apparatus comprise nozzles which introduce water or steam or both over spreaders in spray fashion, the water &c. being supplied by a pump g from a tank i and inducing air through the pipe e into the chamber a. The moist air is withdrawn or circulated by a fan k connected by a pipe j with the supplementary chamber m under the floor l. Baffles n, o may be provided, excess water collected by the baffles o being conducted away by a pipe p; a pipe w also serves to drain the chamber a. Flanges u and spring plates v bear against the sides of the skips and prevent the moist air from finding its way down the sides of the apparatus. In a modification, only one chamber a, Fig. 2, is used, and the supplementary chamber m is formed integral with a carriage used for transporting the skips into and out of the chamber. The carriage is recessed to receive the skips q; and the packing - strips q<1> hold the skips in position and prevent the moist air from finding its way down the sides. The top of the carriage is perforated below each skip; and the bottom has an opening designed to lie over the flanged end of the pipe j, in connexion with the exhaust fan k, the bottom of the carriage being curved and flexible to permit the pipe to fit closely against it. The carriage is provided with wheels by which it is mounted on rails so as to be run into and out of the apparatus which is closed by doors. The pipe f, Fig. 1, by which the water &c. is conducted to the humidifiers is provided with a gauge, and when the water exceeds a certain pressure, a valve f<3>, in a pipe f<2>, opens and allows the excess water to return to the tank i, which may be provided with a gauge. Steam may be admitted to the tank i.
