Abstract

15,420. Cotton, W., Ltd., and Aldridge, C. H. June 27. Straight-bar machines.-Rotary machines of the " Cotton " or other types are provided with instruments B, such as thread - guides, warp guides, coverer points, hooks, &c., for the formation of embroidery, stripes, openwork, &c., carried in trick bars C and constructed with bent, springy upper ends terminating in knuckles B<3>, by means of which the instruments may be held in the inoperative or working positions according as they are pushed up or down in their tricks. The trick bars are carried from arms C<5> by shafts C<6>, to which are imparted the movements in space necessary for the instruments to perform the required operations on the threads, by means of cam-operated linkwork. A number of trick bars C, C<12> may be employed, as shown. In order that certain instruments may be periodicaly removed, as when vertical stripes are being made on the leg of a stocking and the guides nearest the selvedge require to be withdrawn as the web is narrowed, a freely-movable shaft F is provided with handles F<2> and with arms F<3>, one to each division of work, so that the corresponding guides in each division can be picked up by the pins F<4> on depressing the handles. This may also be done automatically by dividing the instruments into left-hand and right-hand sets, each operated separately by mechanism moving laterally with the screws which control the width of the fabric. The centre instruments, for instance the embroidery guides over the centre part of the heel, may be coupled together so as to be put into and out of action simultaneously by the shaft F.
