Abstract

14,328. Stone, J. M. June 14. Fixed sieves; separating by falling upon rebounding surfaces.-A grain-separating screen for separating seeds according to their weight, comprises two sections A, B, each consisting of a bar 11 with an elbow 15 at each end to receive a member 12, the ends of the members 12 being oppositely threaded and engaged by a sleeve 14, so that the sections A, B can be moved towards or from each other. Bracket members 16 upon the outer sides of the bars 11 carry bars 17, around which a length of piano wire 20 is passed to and fro, and its ends attached to the ends of the bar. The bars 11 have notches 22 on their upper sides to hold the strands of wire at equal distances from each other and in parallel relation. The screen is placed in an inclined position with the strands running longitudinally, and the grain to be separated is allowed to fall upon it. The heavier seeds rebound from the strands sufficiently to pass off at the lower end of the screen, while the lighter grains, which do not rebound to so great an extent, pass between the strands. Vetch and wheat, and wheat and oats, may thus be separated. A series of screens is preferably used.
