Abstract

13,919. Grahl, G. de. June 8. Blast apparatus for locomotives comprises, in conjunction with the usual automatic valve permitting the alternative use of the exhaust draught and blower, manuallyoperated valves controlling the steam supply to furnace jets, and permitting the simultaneous use of the blast and blower. The automatic valve 20 forms part of a differential piston, and is closed, when the regulator is open, under the pressure of live steam on the larger piston 18 led by the pipe 40 from the main steam-pipe. The smaller piston is also under live steam pressure from the chamber 23, which is in open connexion with the dome 5, and, when the regulator is shut, steam from this chamber passes by the check-valve 44 to the blower-pipe 48, in addition to passing to the furnace jets by the pipe 43. The manually-operated valves 26, 51 are normally open and closed respectively. The valve 26 is carried by an axially displaceable rod 29 within a rotatable sleeve 30, and is operated by a handle 38 fulcrumed at 37 to a link 36 connected to a ring 33 carried loosely between nuts 34 on the sleeve. A projection 28 on the valve 20 ensures that when this valve is closed the valve 26 is open. The valve 51 is carried by a screwed rotatable rod 52, so connected by an arm 55 and links 57 to a parallel arm 56 on the sleeve 30, which is rotatable by the handle 32, that relative axial displacement between the rod 52 and the sleeve 30 is possible. For this purpose, the arms 55, 56 have spherical bosses 71 and widened-out pinholes 75. To shut off the furnace jets and blower when the regulator is shut, the valve 26 is closed. To operate the blower only, the valve 51 is then opened, and steam passes to the blower pipe from the chamber 23 by the pipe 46. When the regulator is opened, the valve 26 is automatically opened, and the furnace nozzles, main blast, and blower are all in operation, the blower ceasing to operate when the valve 51 is closed.
