Moving stairways.-The mechanically-moved steps 1, 2, 3, &c. of a staircase are guided so as to move parallel to each other in a vertical direction by bell - crank levers and links 1<1>, 1<2>, 2<1>, 2<2>, &c. The levers 1<1> and 2<1> are connected by rods f<2>, f<1> to crank-disks on a rocking shaft C. The levers 1<1>, 3<1>, &c. are connected by a cord g<2>; and the levers 2<2>, 4<2>, &c. are connected by a cord g<1>. As the shaft C rocks, one group of steps moves down while the other set moves up; and thus a person on the staircase, while stepping in an horizontal direction, is at the same time moved upwards or downwards as the case may be. The steps may be divided into more than two groups, for instance into three groups one of which rises, the second is stationary, and the third sinks as the first rises and vice versa.
