[Cognate Application, 16,758/10.] Ladder escapes.-Relates toa fire-escapeof the kind in which a rope ladder g is normally either wound upon a reel k, or folded, in a cabinet placed beneath a window sill z, and is adapted to fall to the ground when a hinged door p is released and thus caused to open outwards by gravity. A short flexible ladder w and hand ropes u are arranged to be hung out through the window opening, in order to enable an escaping person to reach the main ladder. The door p is held closed by a chain q, one link of which is passed over a hook fixed inside the cabinet. In order to release the door p, the chain q is lifted off the hook by means of a chain secured to, and actuated by, one of the hinged covers of the cabinet. The ladder, when released, is held away from the wall by inclined brackets.
