Mills and apparatus.-In a machine for breaking-up feed-cakes and other materials, and consisting of a casing containing a roller a, Fig. 2, having spirally - arranged teeth c which pass between pointed ribs g on the adjustable plate e, a removable plate i with teeth t is provided to break the pieces passing down between the ribs g into still smaller pieces. The plate i can be screwed on to the plate e, which is pivoted and adjustable by means of a lever working over a quadrant. The sieve at the bottom of the machine is made in halves secured together by bolts b<1>, and the cross-bars k between which the meshing m is arranged are secured to plates l attached to the frame of the machine. When the machine is belt driven, the fly-wheel shaft is coupled to the axle of the roller a by a friction clutch consisting of two corrugated disks pressed towards each other by a spring. Or the roller may be recessed at one end and have secured to it, by a nut r<1>, Fig. 10, one end of a band or carrier v, which surrounds the shaft b and abuts at the other end against a nose u in the recess.
