Abstract
11,774. Bacon, R. H. S., and Duncan, F. May 12. Naval mountings.-Relates to apparatus for maintaining the position of a gun when it is correctly elevated and trained, and consists in the employment of mechanism, automatic or non-automatic, in conjunction with gyroscopic angularvelocity meters, for imparting to the gun angular velocities in the vertical and horizontal planes equal in magnitude but opposite in direction to those of the platform due to the rolling and pitching of the ship. The automatic elevationcontrol apparatus shown in Fig. 1, comprises a gyroscopic angular velocity meter d, the pointer d<1> of which is connected by a rod d<2> to the rod c<7> of the control-valve c<4> of a variable-speed hydraulic elevating motor or press c. The gun-slide a is, therefore, rotated about the trunnions a<1>, in the manner stated above, to correct for motion in a vertical plane. The training-motor, which may be of the kind described in Specification 7871/10, is controlled in a similar manner. The pointer d<1> may control the valve c<4> through a servomotor, and a supplementary hand-operated valve may be employed for correcting irregularities in the speed of rotation. The elevationcontrol instrument may be mounted upon the slide a. For non-automatic working, the valves of the motors are controlled by hand-levers in accordance with the indications of the gyroscope instruments. Electric elevating and training gears may be similarly controlled.
