Abstract

11,586. Sterling, F. H. May 10. Sphygmometers.-A clinical manometer for determining the pressure of the blood comprises a curved manometer tube 2 having a collapsible bulb 3 containing mercury at one end and a bulb 4 containing air at the other end. The tube is mounted in a casing 1 and the bulb 3 is in communication with india-rubber pads 7 placed diametrically opposite and projecting below the casing, the space between the bulb and pads being filled with water or other liquid. A third pad 9 is placed between the pads 7, and on the top of this pad rests the flat end of a plunger 10 connected to a spring-controlled index-hand 11 serving to indicate when the pulsations are nullified by the pressure of the pads 7 on the artery. The casing 1 is mounted on a carrier 23 provided with slotted members 24, 25, by means of which the casing is attached to a plate 28 provided with swivelling screws 29. The plate 28 is mounted on a hand-rest strapped to the arm and the hand of the patient, the screws 29 pressing the pads 7 on the artery. The reading of the manometer tube is observed when the index hand 11 ceases to vibrate. The bulb 3 may be dispensed with, in which case the liquid filling the space between the pads 7 and the tube 2 is employed to give the indications.
