Abstract
11,336. Heather, H. J. S. May 7. Electrical equipment. - Induction motors for driving winding-machinery, when used as braking- generators excited by continuous current, are provided with an ammeter or equivalent device arranged in the rotor circuit and marked at the current value corresponding to the maximum torque that the generator is capable of absorbing. The ammeter may be furnished with relay contacts for operating a signal when such current value is exceeded ; or the resistance in circuit is automatically altered, or the control gear is automatically locked, so as to prevent the current from exceeding such maximum value. As shown in Fig. 1, the motor 1 is supplied with current from the mains 5 through the reversing-switch 4 and automatic switch 6. When the shunt coil 7 is de-magnetized owing to failure of the main supply, a source of continuous current 9 is switched into the motor circuit. The battery or the like 9 is also connected to the control motor 10, and to an arm 11 which travels over contacts 12. When the current in the motor circuit exceeds ihe value corresponding to maximum torque, the solenoid 14 pulls down the arm 11 to the lowest contact 12, and the motor 10 by means of a worm gear 15, 16 and switch 17 increases the resistance in the circuit. When no current is flowing, the arm reaches the top contact 12, and the motor 10 also rotates to throw in resistance. When a current value between zero and the maximum value passes, the arm is on the middle contact and the motor 10 rotates to cut out resistance. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the resistance switch is operated by the band-lever 20, and, when the maximum current is reached, the arm 11 makes contact at 12 and causes the solenoid 18 to operate the arm 19 to move one member 23 of a ratchet clutch into engagement with the other member 21. The switch then can only be moved in the direct'on to increase the resistance.
