Abstract

9544. Paul, C. W. June 26, 1909, [Convention date]. Paddle - wheels ; driving - arrange - ments.-An aerial machine is provided with a large hollow body which is rotated to drive the machine forward on land or water. A plane pivoted on the axis of the rotary body may be provided for support while in the air ; or, the rotary sphere or cylinder may be made sufficiently large to raise itself into the air by its rotation. In the form in which a supporting-plane is used, the hollow body k, Fig. 1, is mounted to rotate in an opening in the plane a. The plane comprises a frame having longitudinal and transverse spars strengthened by a central longitudinal parabolic support a<16>, and covered with sheet metal. The body k and arrangement of the car is described below with reference to the modification in which the supporting-plane is dispensed with. The rotary body k, Fig. 5, may be ellipsoidal, spherical, &c. in shape, and comprises a skeleton frame of rings covered with sheet metal. The body rotates on bearings l<1> secured to the frame of the platform l<4> which is arranged inside the body. The platform is braced by girders l<2>, l<6>, l<7> and carries the motors f and rooms as shown. To the platform trunnions is fixed an outer frame m<1>, m<2> passing over the upper part af the rotary body and carrying a stage for the aviator. The body k is rotated by a wheel f<2> engaging with the interior of the body. Specifications 9382/97, 11,444/03, 14,687/03, and 6017/04, are referred to. The Specification in the original form as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following:-The driving-mechanism for the rotary body k may be provided with means for varying the contact pressure of the driving-wheel f<2>. The axis f<1>, Fig. 24 (cancelled), of the wheel f<2> is mounted in eccentrics adjustable by a crank f<4>. The wheel f<2> may be provided with a pneumatic tyre, or it may be moved against the action of springs f<6> on the shaft f<1>, Fig. 29 (cancelled), by means of rollers f<7> carried by a shaft f<8> movable on the shaft f<1>. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
