Abstract
9210. Kilroy, W. D.. and Cox. O. April 15. Dynamometers, rotary - transmission; thrust indicators for shafts &c. The torsion and thrust of a shaft are measured by forcing fluid between two parts of the shaft in such a way as to produce a separation of the parts, both transversely and longitudinally with respect to the axis of the shaft. One shaft length 3 terminates in a ram 4 received bv a casing 1 secured to the shaft length 2. The ram is formed with ribs 5 which intermesh with ribs 6 on the casing and thus transmit the rotary motion. Fluid may be forced through pipes 10, 7 so as to separate the parts axially at the point 8, the pressure, as indicated by a gauge 11, measuring the thrust. Similarly, fluid may be forced through a pipe 12 and ducts 9 so as to produce a separation between the ribs 5, 6, the pressure required being a measure of the torque. In order to prevent escape of fluid around the ends of the ribs 5, spring-mounted sliding plates are provided. Electric or other means indicate when sufficient separation has been effected.
