Abstract

8450. Hatfield, H. S. April 7. Registering maxima. -The rate of movement of a mechanism averaged over a certain interval of time is measured by registering the difference between the total movement up to any instant, and the movement at that interval of time previously. In an arrangement for use as a maximumdemand indicator, a wheel 9, Fig. II, driven by a clock, carries a chain 10, Fig. I, the links of which carry sliding pins 11, which can be displaced transversely to the chain by a wheel 13, driven intermittently by connexion with an electric meter. A disk on the same spindle as the wheel 9 has teeth 12, the spaces between which are opposite to the pins; the teeth 12 prevent the wheel 13 from turning unless a pin is in position to be moved by it. The pins which have been displaced engage with two starwheels 17, 18, Fig. I, arranged so that the time taken by the chain in carrying any particular pin from the wheel 17 to the wheel 18 is the predetermined time-interval, say an hour. The star-wheels 17, 18 are connected by a differential gear 20 to a shaft which turns a non-return pointer. The pointer thus indicates the greatest increment in the meter - reading that has occurred in an hour since the pointer was set to zero. The mechanism for driving the wheel 13, in the case of a direct-current meter of the type in which the armature oscillates and the counting-train is driven by a small electro-magnet 2, consists of a toothed wheel 5 operated by the armature 7 of the electro-magnet 2, the wheel 5 having two insulating-pieces 6. An electromagnet 1 in series with the magnet 2 is normally short-circuited by two brushes 3, 4 through the wheel 5, but, when the brushes engage with the pieces 6, the magnet 1 is energized and turns a wheel 15 by means of an armature 14 and a pawl 16. The wheel 15 is geared with the wheel 13. Instead of the magnets, a mechanical con. nexion between the wheel 15 and the meter may be used. Specification 5530/02 is referred to
