Dibbling-apparatus.-In a machine for making holes for planting potatoes, seeds, cabbages, &c., the holes are made by studs projecting from wheels mounted in a pivoted auxiliary frame which is adapted to be raised and lowered, the axle of the stud-wheels being in the same vertical plane as the axles of the travelling wheels when the machine is at work, and the studs being positively rotated by gearing while in contact with the soil. The travelling wheels 4 are carried by brackets 3 on the. main frame 1, and the stud-wheels 14 are loosely mounted on an axle 8 in the pivoted auxiliary frame 6, which is raised or lowered by means of a hand-lever 10, a catch being provided to hold it in its raised position. The tyres of the wheels 14 are flanged at 17<a> to guide them along ridges. The studs 15 are hollow, and are carried by spindles 18 provided with spur pinions 19, which are adapted to engage with toothed sectors 23 carried by the axle 8. The sectors 23 may be adjusted to take up wear of the teeth. A brush may be arranged to clean the studs as they enter the ground. According to the Provisional Specification, the wheels 4, 14 are all adjustable laterally, the number of studs may be varied, and guiding-handles may be fixed to the main frame.
