Rotary perforating-machines; perforating by cutting or ribbed bed.-A machine for cutting lines of perforations comprises one or more cutting-blades 10, a grooved cutting-surface 14, and means for drawing the blades across the said surface. The paper is cut through where it rests on the surface 14 between the grooves, and remains intact where it passes over the grooves. In one form, Fig. 2, the blades 10 are carried by cross-bars 9 mounted upon a rotating shaft 2 by means of disks 8, which have peripheral T-shaped grooves to receive locking-nuts and allow adjustment around the shaft 2. The grooved cutting-surface 14 is a cylindrical shell carried by a roller on a shaft 3 gearing with the shaft 2. The shell 14 is held in place by a locking ring 15, and is interchangeable. The blades 10 are reciprocated across the surface 14 by means of a cam-wheel 16 fixed on the shaft 2 and co-operating with a roller 17 attached to the machine frame. To obtain two rows of perforations close together, a cutting-blade may be secured to each side of a cross-bar 9, Fig. 3, and the attachment screws 11 are staggered on opposite sides of the bar, so that a second bar may be brought close up to the bar 9. The gear-wheel 6 is secured to the shaft 3 by bolts 20 passing through slots, which allow the shaft to be turned relatively to the gear-wheel to allow the lines of perforations to be located where required upon the paper. In a modification, Fig. 5, for forming longitudinal lines of perforations, the cutting-blades are disks 24, and the cutting-surface 29 on the roller 28 is longitudinally grooved. To give a draw-cut, the cutting-disks are rotated faster than the roller 28. The disks 24 are fastened to hubs 25, each adjustably mounted upon the shaft 22 by means of a key 27.
