Moulds; processes.- Perforated cork or peat bricks, blocks, tiles, panels, mouldings, &c. are formed by breaking up c o r k or peat, mixing it with agglomerants as described below, heating the mass to 100‹ C., moulding under pressure in a mould provided with cores to produce the perforations whereby the weight of the brick is decreased and the insulating value increased, and drying the brick in an oven at 150‹ C. The bricks after drying may be steeped in a bath of pitch or tar and heavy oil such as crude shale oil at a temperature of 100‹ C. To 100 kilos. of cork or peat, the following agglomerant compositions are added, (1) 20 kilos. of a solution containing 16 kilos, of casein, 1 kilo. of formalin and 100 kilos. of water and 5 kilos. of a solution containing 15 kilos. of lime and 100 kilos. of water, (2) 25 kilos. of a mixture composed of 20 kilos. of silicate of soda or potash to 100 litres of water, and (3) 25 kilos. of a mixture composed of 15 kilos. of gelatine, 1 kilo. of formalin, and 100 litres of water. In addition to these agglomerants, powdered dry pitch may be added to the cork or peat in the proportion of 10 kilos. of pitch to 100 kilos. of cork or peat. The moulds are constructed with the sides and ends of I-section-members having the internal portions of the flanges removed, loose bottom plates resting on the bottom flanges of the sides and ends, rods or cores C of any desired shape and loose cover-plates B, on which the press acts, and which are retained, to prevent any expansion of the compressed mass, by inserting rods E, E' through holes D, D' in the sides of the moulds.
