Abstract

5907. Rupley, D. March 9, 1909, [Convention date]. Body-motion and weight of rider, propelling by.-In a velocipede chair, more particularly for use by invalids, the shaft of the driving- wheels B is driven through upper and lower racks A<2>, B<2> and spur-wheels R, S with pawl- and - ratchet clutches T, U, the racks being mounted upon a member V which is pivotally connected by a cross-pin h to the rocking-seat portion of the chair. The member V is slotted to engage an intermediate guide-block Y upon the shaft, the upper and lower edges of the slot being strengthened by plates Z. The rocking portion of the chair comprises members a, b, j, cross-rods f, g, h, i, k, a back e, and outstanding arms c with a seat d. To provide the bearings for the pivots of the seat portion, hangers H supporting a platform G are extended to the rear of the shaft and connected to the ends of brace members. The stem D of the steering- wheel fork is mounted in a block C and controlled by a handle F. When desired the vehicle may be propelled by turning the road wheels by hand.
