Abstract

5889. Marks, E. C. R., [Crown Cork and Seal Co.]. April 19, 1909. Bottling.- In a bottling - machine having a filling - chamber and a vent tube adapted to move down inside the bottle, venting takes place continuously until the bottle is filled to the required height and is shut off when the vent tube is raised. The invention is shown applied to a machine for filling and capping bottles, so that when the vent tube is raised the bottles are capped under gaseous pressure. The caps are supported in the filling-chamber at one side of the line of movement of the vent tube and are afterwards impelled into position for capping the bottle by means similar to those described in Specification 5888/10. The vent tube M, Fig. 4, is slidable within the capping- plunger I<1> and has lateral ports adapted to register with ports in the plunger stem the gases escaping through the plunger housing to a waste-pipe. The tube may be operated by a hand-rod M'‹, Fig. 4, provided with a series of tappets adapted to engage a catch-plate M<15> on the plunger housing, so that the tube may be positioned as required by the conditions of the particular filling, or held entirely out of service; or, the tube may be operated automatically by a cam N, Fig. 3, and a bell-crank lever N' adapted to engage a collar N<2>. Venting takes place from within the bottle and ceases when the liquid reaches the vent. The tube is then raised to its inoperative position, the withdrawal of the tube being closely followed by the bottle rising into capping position, which, owing to the greater bulk of the bottle tends to increase the pressure in the filling chamber during capping. During filling, entering liquid impinges laterally on and is divided by the vent tube, so that it occupies the annular space between the tube and the bottle neck, leaving the central passage free for the snift.
