Abstract

4269. Harper, S. S. Feb. 23, 1909, [Convention date]. Current motors; rotors; setting and alining turbines and shafts.-Relates to improvements in windmills of the kind described in Specification 14,348/06, [Class 10, Animal-power engines &c.]. Rims 2, connected by vertical stays 7, are secured by ranges of spokes 5 to hubs 6 mounted on a shaft 1. The spokes 5 are of equal length and the method of securing them to the hub is shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 7. The stays and spokes may be simultaneously put under tension by sliding one of the hubs 6 along the shaft, a device comprising collars 11, 12 and bolts 13 being employed for this purpose, Fig. 8. Alternatively, each stay and spoke may be separately tightened by means of a nut. Where more than two rims are employed, the ranges of spokes all extend upwards from the rims, except the lowest range which extends downwards. The vanes 4, which are mounted on the stays 7, Fig. 10, comprise a frame 15 of hollow tubing and sails of sheet metal or canvas, or the frame and sail may be combined. Ball bearings immersed in mercury are provided at the upper or lower end of the vane, and also at the points of connexion of the struts 32 with the sails and the ring 33. These struts comprise two inclined members 34 and a vertical member 35, and they impart the requisite feathering motion to the vanes. The ring 33 is fitted with removable wearing blocks. Stops 74 control the movements of the vanes. Fig. 18 shows a method of supporting the windmill on a tower 68. The shaft 1 may be made of a metal tube into which a number of rods 57 have been introduced, reinforced by liquid cement or concrete 58, Fig. 23. In order to adjust the position of the shaft in the bearing 59, it is provided with inclined slots 66, which are engaged by the unthreaded extremities of bolts 65 passing through the sleeve 63 of the supporting-bearing. By twisting the shaft in this sleeve, axial adjustment of the rotor is effected.
