Abstract
4198. Du Pont, A. B. April 7, 1909, [Convention date]. Carriages.-In passenger cars for underground railways constructed with the body hung low down between two axle-trucks, placed one beyond each end of the body, so that the dimensions of the subway may be reduced without involving any decrease in the carrying capacity of the car, the supporting-frame of the body comprises a girder construction in which the main compression member extends along the roof and is connected at its ends to projecting brackets, which are also of girder construction and are pivotally mounted on the trucks. Moreover, the body is made of substantially the same width as the distance between the outside faces of the wheels supporting the truck. Fig. 1 shows a car comprising a body A provided at its ends with brackets C, C<1>, which are made of truss or plate girder construction and are pivoted upon axle-trucks B, so that the floor of the car hangs near the bottom of the subway. In order that the car may be of great length, the supporting or side members are also made of plate or truss girder construction, comprising a main tension member A<4>, Fig. 5, and a main compression member A<5>, These side members are moreover provided with a number of openings for the entrance and exit of passengers, between transverse seats extending across the full width of the vehicle.
