Abstract

2987. Wunderlich, A., and Hughes, G. A., [trading as London Electric Firm]. Feb. 7. Self-sustaining gear.-Comprises self-sustaining gear in which rings, normally carried around by the driving-gear, are forced apart by balls or rollers so as to act as a brake when the driving-shaft is released. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a winch. A disk b is formed on the driving-sleeve a, and is provided with a number of pins c and intermediate slots. The pins work in slots i in rings f, g, which are mounted loosely on each side of the disk, and are formed with grooves k of varying depth, as shown in Fig. 6, which is a section on the line A, B, Fig. 5, these grooves corresponding in position to the slots in the disk. The ring f is provided with pins n which work frictionally in a groove in the cover-plate q, and the ring g engages the winch drum r by means of pins o. Balls m are placed in the slots in the disk and rest in the grooves k in the rings. When the driving-shaft is rotated, the pins c on the disk bear against the ends of the slots i in the rings and carry the rings and the drum around. When the shaft is released, the load turns the ring g relatively to the ring f; the balls then force the rings apart, and the drum is jammed against the winch casing. In the Provisional Specification, the gear is described with reference to a winch of the kind described in Specification 10,078/05 in which there is an eccentric reducing-gear.
