Abstract
2203. Hall, H. W. Jan. 28. Screw propellers.-The lifting-screws of an helicopter aerial machine are mounted on rotating shafts 9 and comprise a series of elements of arched or bird-wing form in the direction of rotation mounted in series on a spiral between inner and outer cylindrical frames 3, 6 connected by spiders 7, 8 and stiffened by wires 10. Each element is constructed of two radial bars 18, 19, Fig. 3, connected by end bars 20, 21 and intermediate bars 22, the whole being covered above and below with cloth. The angle made by the internal end bar 21 is greater than that made by the outer end bar 20. as shown in Figs. 7-10, in which Figs. 7 and 8 show the outer and inner end bars of arched form and Figs. 9 and 10 the bars of bird-wing form. To prevent cavitation action of the screws, that part of their peripheries situated underneath the elements is covered with cloth.
