Abstract

1258. Blackburn, R. Jan. 18. Balancing. - In apparatus whereby the adjustment of the ailerons or the warping of the main planes of aeroplane machines for balancing laterally or longitudinally is effected by means of a pneumatic relay set in motion by a pendulum apparatus, two pneumatic cylinders are arranged in tandem, their pistons being connected to a single rod which is connected to the operating-wires of the planes. A special construction of pendulum is also described, and comprises a rod s pivoted at t and formed at its lower end with a slot v, in which is mounted the axle of a weighted roller w adapted to run on a rail x secured to the framing. The upper end of the rod s has a slotted connexion with a valve-rod o, which is attached to a pair of valves n, n<1> which govern the flow of air to and from cylinders a, a<1>, the pistons e of which are in operative connexion with the balancing- planes. The valves n, n<1> are in the form of piston valves, being open at their inner ends and formed with through passages q and exhaust ports r. Thus, when the weight w rolls on the rail x due to inclination of the machine, the valves are operated so as to admit compressed air from one or other of the pipes p, p<1> by means of the passages q and k or k<1> to the corresponding cylinder a or a<1>, the other cylinder being simultaneously vented through its exhaust port r. The pistons e are connected by a rod d, which is connected to the wires m ... m<3> passing to the balancing-planes by means of a bracket f and a wire or cord g, which is provided with a chain portion g<1> engaging a chain-wheel i, the axle of which is connected to the wires m ... m<3> by a lever j. According to the Provisional Specification, an hydraulic relay may be used.
