Abstract

886. Hamilton, W. L. Jan. 13. [Cognate Application, 10,635/10.] Elevated railways; tie-bars; rails, metallic builtup and non-metallic; rail sections.-An elevated track is composed of a series of longitudinal sections, each having some relative freedom and being wholly supported throughout its length by resting upon a cable in suspension. Each section comprises two ways E, Fig. 2, suspended from a yoke C resting on the cable A. The wheels G are retained by the flanges F or by guide-rollers. The wheels may be outside the sections, and only a single way E, Fig. 6, may be used. The wheels may run on a metal filling in the way E or on the crown E<1>, Fig. 15, and a metal tread N may be provided. The ways E may be separate and suspended from two cables A<1>, Fig. 20, and the joints of the sections, or the wheels, may be staggered. The sections may have wood or metal filling L with bolts &c. M. When the joints are square, the sections may be coupled together and across by U or T-shaped tiebars S loosely connected to lugs R<1> at each joint ; when the joints are staggered, the tie-bars are at one end connected to the centre of a section. An electric conductor W may be carried by these tiebars for traction purposes. The cables are provided at intervals with suspension supports X, Fig. 26, or depression stays. The first Provisional Specification states also that carrier vehicles may be substituted for hangers, and that an outer fence may extend upwards from the track and carry a guard at its head.
