Abstract

718. Banchieri, L. A. M. Jan. 11. Devulcanizing waste indiarubber. - Indiarubber is devulcanized and reduced to the condition of crude caoutchouc by subjecting it to the action of the vapour of a substance or derivative of the terpene group, preferably a terpinol such as terpene dihydrate. The terpene vapour generated in the generator 1 passes by a pipe 3 into the steam - jacketed devulcanizing chamber 4, in which the rubber is placed in small pieces upon shelves 5, any unabsorbed terpene returning to the generator 1 or to a storage chamber by a pipe 11. In order to recover the terpene from the rubber, the chamber 4 is exhausted by a pump 25 through a pipe 18; the vapour condenses in a coil 17 and collects in a chamber 21, from which it is subsequently drawn off by the pump 25 into a chamber 23. Last traces of terpene are driven off from the rubber by forcing hot air into the chamber 4 through a pipe 13, the vapours escaping through a pipe 31 into a receiver.
