Abstract

678. Schar, F., and Schmid, M. von. Jan. 22, 1909, [Convention date]. Making wire and like chains; welding. - In a machine for making chains from links of the type in which there are two eyes at a rightangle, the link is placed on two pivoted jaws, a pair of vertical stamps move downwards to hold the link and to straighten out the previously - folded portion, and the jaws are then moved to bend the link. After the link is annealed, the part 1 is folded to facilitate insertion in a finished link by a cam-operated stamp 32, Fig. 11, which forces it against the sides of the perforation 31. The ends of the link, after removal from the annealing-furnace, are placed in grooved jaws 3, 4, Fig. 5, which are pivoted at 12 in a vertically-adjustable carriage and supported on horizontally-movable stamps 14. A cam-operated carriage having a stamp 6 descends to hold the part 1, and a cam 10 on a stamp 11 also descends to press out the two levers 7 mounted on the carriage, and so open out the folded edges of the part 1, which are then forced by the stamp 11 on to the jaw 4. The horizontal stamps 14, after the jaws have partially closed, then turn them about their pivots to form the eye 1, and to press the parts 1, 1 together. The link, on release of the jaws, may be then gripped by tongs 15 mounted on a slide 17 vertically adjustable in an horizontally adjustable slide 18 to bring the link opposite welding-electrodes 20, which are moved inwards by cams and levers. When welding is completed, one of the levers moves a second lever so as to release a catch from a third lever, which is drawn back by a spring to break the circuit. On the return of the slide, the chain is raised by the tongs 15 to allow of the insertion of the next blank. Welding may be dispensed with. The Specification in the original form, as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), states also that the closing of the rings may be effected by welding, and that electric welding may be along the whole surface of the rings, or the surfaces may have projections such as ribs, nipples, &c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
