Centrifugal machines; processes.- Relates to a process and apparatus for moulding by centrifugal action hollow objects, such as columns, girders, pedestals, pipes, posts, vases, &c., and solid objects, such as stair-treads, slabs, &c., which can be grouped so as to enclose a hollow space, and consists in depositing the moulding materials in the mould in a helical stream by a sliding feed appliance, and pressing the material against the mould by means of an internal former. Fig. 4 shows an open-ended pipe &c. mould D, secured at one end in a drum N on the rotating face-plate B of a high-speed lathe and at the other end in a collar bearing E. The moulding material, such as clay, cement, concrete, artificial stone, &c., is carried in a hopper J, Fig. 6, mounted on the lathe saddle K, and is conveyed by a screw I to a mouth - piece H situated at the face-plate end of the pipe mould D. As the lathe saddle is traversed, the material is deposited in the mould, and a former, secured at the mouth-piece end of the conveyer, shapes the internal surface of the object to the required profile. The former consists of wiping-tools F, pressing- rollers G, and a spring amoothing- plate G<1>, which are moved radially by a hand-wheel M at the hopper end of the conveyer operating through a spindle M', a spider m, and links n on which the forming-devices are mounted. When a tapered article is to be produced, the wheel M may be arranged to be operated through gearing by the traversing-screw C. Lengthy objects may be produced step by step by securing one or more additional moulds to the end of the mould D, when this latter is filled. In a modification of the apparatus applicable for forming ornamental columns, vases, &c. of differently coloured materials, and cement pipes with acid-proof linings, the different materials are carried in adjacent compartments J<1>, J<2> in the hopper and are conveyed separately by means of an endless band I<1>, I<2> to adjacent mouthpieces H<1>, H<2> in front of the former, and are there deposited in the mould in helical streams, either side by side or superposed according to the rate of traverse of the lathe saddle. Reinforcements may be inserted in the mould previous to introducing the moulding-material, and papers carrying glass or stone mosaic cubes may be placed in the mould to form a mosaic facing. Figs. 14 and 15 show a construction of apparatus for moulding solid objects centrifugally. The mould T is for producing four stair treads, the material being introduced in a helical stream and shaped by a tapered former Q mounted so as to rotate with the mould behind the pressing and wiping devices G, F. Fig. 21 shows the machine adapted for producing pipes of eggshaped profile. The former device Q is mounted directly behind the wiper F and on guide bars U, secured at their right-hand ends to the collar bearing E and at their left-hand ends supported in the drum N.
