Abstract

29,482. Reynolds, A. Dec. 16. Drawings to Specification. Cast-iron and scrap processes.-An oxidized charge of steel is dead melted with alloying and reducing materials in a ladle, crucible, or furnace having an inert lining and under an inert slag free from iron. The vessel is.preferably pre-heated, the materials added in two stages, and the operation carried out in vacuo. In a modification, the steel is treated with some reducing material in a ladle, and the charge is transferred to an open-hearth or other furnace for the final adjustment of the composition. The slags may be composed of silicate of alumina with silicate of lime or soda or chloride of sodium or calcium as a flux or of a complex silicate of lime, magnesia, and alumina, or a mixture of lime with alumina but without silica, together with a suitable flux. The lining of the vessel is composed of silicate of alumina, lime, dolomite, or magnesia; methods of forming linings of silicate of alumina are described in the Specification. Specifications 11,002/03 and 28,030/06 are referred to. Ore processes.-An iron free slag may be obtained by smelting aluminous iron ore together with a large quantity of fluxing material, in an electric or blast furnace.
