Abstract

29,240. Hubbell, H. C. Dec. 14. Cells; separators; electrodes; electrolytes.-In a two-cell alkaline accumulator, applicable to miners' lamps, the cell is made of Monell metal, an alloy containing 70 per cent of nickel and 30 per cent of copper. A single strip is bent into S-form, with brazed overlapping edges 1<b>, Fig. 3, and a brazed bottom to form two rectangular compartments. The electrodes are arranged parallel to the partition, the outer pair in each compartment being in contact with the casing and each inner electrode being insulated from it by strips 4 of rubber &c., while the cellcontacting pairs are of opposite polarity. A cover with perforated lugs is secured by means of hinged bolts 13 and nuts having screwdriver slots. The positive electrodes consist preferably of 60 per cent of silver oxide and 40 per cent of nickel hydrate compressed into nickel - plated iron-gauze containers; while in the negative electrodes, the silver oxide is replaced by cadmium oxide and the mass is reduced clectrolytically. The electrolyte is a solution of a caustic alkali or alkaline carbonate.
