Abstract

Resistance furnaces. - Silica is fused in a furnace provided with one or more dividing- plates c, Fig. 1, of carbon, carborundum, asbestos, &c., insulated from and radiating from a central resistance a. When plastic, the mass b of silica is placed upon a table f, Fig. 2, and opened out as shown so as to expose the soft interior. It is then worked as usual by rolling &c. In a modification, the resistance a<1>, Fig. 3, is hollow and perforated laterally so that the fused mass may be blown in a mould d by air introduced through the resistance. When cool, the mass is broken at the radial plates c to form bricks suitable for lining furnaces, boilers, &c. In a further modification, the mass is pressed in a mould, instead of being blown, and divided when cold as before.
