Abstract

26,665. Summers, J. Nov. 17. Heating - furnaces for metals.-In furnaces for heating and annealing iron or steel sheets, the hot gases from a fire-place pass into longitudinal flues arranged at each side, and enter the working chamber near the lower parts of the covers placed over the sheets, baffle-walls being provided to prevent the gases from impinging directly upon the trays supporting the sheets. From the furnace, the products of combustion pass through passages 4 to channels u and enter the working chamber a through openings v beneath arches x, which are supported by columns y, z. Additional openings 2, which may be filled with loose bricks, are provided at each end as shown. The baffle-walls w, provided for protecting the trays, are formed with openings opposite the columns z, and are supported by walls 11 forming a continuation of the walls y. Shelves 5 are provided above the flues u and support loose brick or other beat-retaining material. From the chamber a, the gases escape through flues 8 and openings 9 to the outlet flue. Specification 10,370/09, [Class 72, Iron &c.], is referred to. Doors.-The door consists of a frame 13, Fig. 9, formed of channel bars 14 and filled with firebricks 15. These bricks are partly held in place by bolts 19 entering recesses in the bricks ; and the frame is of such size that only bricks are presented on the inner face to the doorway of the furnace. Eyes 17 are provided for lifting the door, and the screws for keeping the door in place press against a cross-bar 20.
